Ettaler: Domesticated square
l'Atelier Nomadic

The core of the project by l'Atelier Nomadic consisted in transforming the mono-functionality of a Plattenbau apartment in the center of Berlin.

The Plattenbau is a post war architecture Berlin’s housing block characterized by rational and orthogonal shapes.

The existing apartment of 70 sqm consisted of two bedrooms, a closed kitchen, a small living room and 15 sqm for circulation to transform a 2 bedrooms apartment in a 3 bedrooms + 1 office apartment.

Located on the 4th floor of a building at the end of the urban block, the flat has three orientations: west, east and south.

The main programmatic challenge was to design a central and open catalyst space shaped by a series of additional programs.

The result is a domesticated square, surrounded by a series of small mono-functional rooms.

Entrance hall, office room, intimate corridor, guest room, kitchen and terrace have direct access to the central square and nourish each other with different interfaces and relationships.

In parallel, to grid the complexity of the program, the materialities are clearly defined by three axes.

The horizontal elements are mineral (grey poured concrete), the transversal ones are in wood (hash wood and painted black mdf) and those longitudinal are made of a metallic material (stainless steel, aluminum and polycarbonate).
